I. The first reason to visit Ulupalakua Ranch – Upcountry Maui is to take the time to drive through lush green pastureland as you drive the winding road that leads to the ranch. Jaw-dropping views of the island below are amazing. Fringed by 150-year-old trees spreading their canopy of shade over the Ranch Store & Grill and Tedeschi Winery just across the street are just waiting to share their story to visitors. Whether you set out to drive just to the Ranch Store or Winery, or if you are on your way to/from driving the Road to Hana you do not want to miss the beautiful drive to the Ulupalakua Ranch.
II. The second reason to take the time to visit Ulupalakua Ranch would be the slow-roasted Maui Cattle Co. beef brisket with housemade BBQ sauce and olive-oil-and-parsley smashed potatoes. Sit at a picnic table in the shade of the towering trees, and slip back to a by gone era of 150 years ago when ranch hands also took a break in the shade to enjoy a plate of Maui beef and a cold drink.
III. The third reason is Chef Will Munder – his goal to serve only Maui-grown produce (he also has his own micro farm in Kula). Chef Will’s personal favorite is the juicy Ulupalakua lamb burger with swiss cheese, Waipoli lettuce, sweet Kula onions and ripe tomato. Visitors have always been able to step up to the counter and order great food but Chef Will has put some new twist on some of the long standing favorites and made everything better. Now everything is made from scratch and as local as possible. The Ulupalakua lamb, beef and famous Elk Burger are part of the commitment of the ranch to serve only meat from the Ranch or from Maui. And not to worry if you have a GLUTEN ALLERGY like me, I can still have my personal favorite Maui Cattle Co Beef burger on a Gluten Free Roll, my treat of grilled Maui Gold Pineapple for desert.
The open-air grill is fired up at 10 am with Grill Hours from 1100am to 300pm – so plan accordingly –
Take time to shop at the Ulupalakua Store where everything inside the store will put a smile on your face or remind you of times gone by with lots of simple things like red bandanas, silver belt buckles, cowboy hats, jars of ‘olelo berry jam, music by Maui musicians and art by local Maui artists.
After all the motto at the Ulupalakua Ranch is “Happy People” – be sure and take a “selfie” while sitting on the weathered wooden bench on the lanai next to one of the grinning scalawags (created by historic sculptor Reems Mitchell) I dare you try not to grin back at them.
