Larry Rivera

Larry Rivera is known as Kauai’s Living Treasure of Music.  He has written over fifty songs  that are found on albums, cassettes, CDs and videos all over the world. A very talented musician he is probably best known for playing one of his Ukuleles, he says that his ukulele makes him feel relaxed and helps him relieve stress but it also helps him share the spirit of Kauai. His composition, “Aloha is the Spirit of Kauai”  was recognized by the County and Mayor and is seen on posters all around town with this reference. Larry uses his title of the ambassador of harmony  and his Ukulele to bring people together. I had the pleasure of  watching Larry perform his magic  while on a tour  of Coco Palms Resort  with Roberts Movie Tour. Larry  stills serves as the musical director when guest come to visit the resort, even in the sad state of disrepair that the resort sits in today, as Larry talks story about the resort in its days of glory  you get a glimpse of the ways things were during  the filming of Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii, in fact, Larry Rivera has exclusive rights to host Blue Hawaii Weddings at Coco Palms Lagoon (shown in the photo below) .

Blue Hawaii Wedding location at Coco Palms Lagoon

Kamalani, one of Larry’s most famous  songs, was written at the request of  Grace Guslander, the manager of Coco Palms Hotel. She wanted him to write a song that talked about the Legend of the Frog as written by Meleana Soong. He was at home recovering from the flu, and after their conversation he looked outside his window and saw a beautiful bird, the bird kept singing and  somehow the words and music came together. You can find this and other beautiful songs on his CD Beautiful Rainbow, this is my favorite of his many CD’s .
Larry  can be found doing weekly performances at the following locations:
Cafe’ Portofino  on Wednesday  at 700pm
Coconut Plantation Cultural Center  Friday at 500pm
Kauai Museum on Saturday at 100pm

Some of my favorite locals

I can still remember my first visit to Kaua’i and was amazed to find so many roosters. I like most visitors wondered why in the world this beautiful tropical island had so many colorful roosters, and being from the country found it so funny to hear one crowing in the morning.  The debate goes on about […]

Diamond Head State Monument – O’ahu

Visitors have been flocking to Waikiki Beach  for years, and all the while Diamond Head State Monument stands guard and leads visitors to the shores of O’ahu, but long before this crater became Diamond Head this pronounced seaward summit with deeply eroded ridges was known as Le’ahi. Early history says that Hi’iaka the sister of the fire goddess […]
