With only ten percent of Kaua’i’s landscape accessible by road, to make the most of your visit to Kaua’i you have to get out of your car and go exploring. So many options are available to you from hiking, biking, horseback riding, mountain tubing, ATV adventures probably more options that you will have time for during your stay on the island.
Five of my favorites are :
Horseback Riding – ride along bluffs, across foothills, across sugar cane fields past secluded beaches and across working ranches. A variety of companies offer guided tours ranging from 90 minutes to five hours – some will include hiking and a swim in a natural pool below a waterfall. Some offer private tours as well. One of my personal favorites is with Princeville Ranch.
Zipline- soar like a bird while safely harnessed over some of Kauai’s lush green landscape. Kaua’i is so tropical with so much natural beauty even zip over a hidden waterfall.
River Kayaking and Standup Paddle Boarding -whether a nice easy paddle along the Wailua River to the famed Fern Grotto, the Huel’ia River to the Menehune Fishpond or on the Hanalei River. For those that want something with a little more action ocean kayaking is available the summer months, hire a guide for the best experience.
Hiking – A hiker’s paradise there are so many options depending upon skill level – one popular spot is the Waimea Canyon. Koke’e State Park offers more than 40 miles of footpaths leading to scenic lookouts. The Kalalau Trail along the Napali Coast is the island’s most famous and most challenging at 11 miles. Other popular hikes include Kuilau, Moalepe and Powerline Trailhead. Plan ahead – maps are available through the Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Division of State Parks for more hiking information. For your safety never hike alone and be sure and tell someone where you are going.
Mountain Tubing – It is okay to act like a kid when you do this fun activity-grab an inner tube and enjoy your trip down the river. Sturdy tubes let you float down through Kauai’s interior past breathtaking natural beauty. Guided tours, basic instructions and safety equipment provided. My personal favorite is Kauai Backcountry Adventures (photo courtesy of KBA) in addition to mountain tubing they also have some great zipline tours.
