Colors of Junkanoo
The origin of the Junkanoo is different based upon who is telling the story, but the one thing that is for sure is that it could be said that the heartbeat and soul of the Bahamian people would be the Junkanoo drums. As a general rule of thumb if there is a significant celebration of any kind Junkanoo is there, that is a good indication that Bahamians are excited about something. Junkanoo parades accompany the arrival of dignitaries, beginning or end of major sporting events.
Thousands of visitors come to the Bahamas each year for the Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival and other Junkanoo Festivals celebrating Junkanoo on Bay Street. I had the opportunity to stay at Sandals Royal Bahamian last weekend and we were treated to an authentic (although calmer) Junkanoo parade and celebration of drums–guests were invited to dance along with Junkanoo dancers adorned in beautifully crafted costumes and accompanied by the beat of the goatskin drums.
