Easily Jamaica’s most popular and famous attraction, Dunns River Falls offers visitors 600 feet of climbing pleasure (not to worry if you forgot your required water shoes- they have them for purchase). A true Jamaican treasure, and a one of a kind activity in the Caribbean.
The Arawak name “Xayamaca” means land of rivers and springs. The area around the falls was called “Las Chorreras” by the Spaniards, but degenerated over the years to Ocho Rios (meaning eight rivers) even though there are only four rivers in the area. The falls constantly rejuvenates itself from pieces of travertine rock, the miniature dome-shaped waterfalls are generally connected to hot spring movement within the limestone caves, a definite gorgeous feat of nature.
Today the new Dunn’s River Falls Park is a combination of modern amenities with natural surroundings, improved roads into the park, restaurant, craft market , lockers for rent, clean restroom facilities. Once you arrive at the park you will be matched with a guide who’s job it is to help his group climb the falls as safely as possible. More than likely it will be crowded when you visit the falls, but a lot of fun and definitely worth the wait (check with your resort to find out which days there are cruise ships in port and if possible visit the falls on a day without a cruise ship).
Dunn’s River Falls was also featured in the James Bond Movie “Dr No”, the movie also featured Ursula Andress walking out on Dunn’s River Beach.
