Have you ever had a Malassada?

Fresh Malassadas

If you have no idea what I am talking about when I use the word Malassada, then you definitely have not had one. Truly a warm, fresh Malassada  is one of life’s little pleasures not to be missed if at all possible. Portuguese immigrants first brought these mouth watering treats to the islands, but are now a Hawaiian treat for most visitors to the islands.  Basically a doughnut without a hole, deep-fried, sugar-coated  and so ‘ono (delicious). Malassadas  are best eaten hot, on the spot at most bakeries that specialize in malassadas, fairs, festivals and sometimes at  Farmer’s Markets.

Malassadas can be plain, but are often filled with haupia(coconut),chocolate, passion fruit, kona coffee creams.  Probably will blow your diet  for at least one day, but the guilty feelings will be so worth it. Problem is , you will probably be hooked and will have a hard time only eating one.

My Favorite Picks:

Leonard’s Bakery – OAHU- 933 Kapahulu Ave, open daily (808) 737-5591

TEX Drive In – Big Island 45-690 Pakalana St , Honokaa (808) 775-0598

Remember the best way to enjoy your visit to the Hawaiian Islands is to get out and Explore!

Farm to Table in Hawai’i

Working with a trainer for the last six months or so, I have developed a whole new appreciation for holistic living, organic produce and ingredients and am learning to incorporate fresh ingredients in cooking whenever possible.  Naturally, visiting the Hawaii islands several times a year, I am aware first hand of the amazing dining opportunities being offered with many […]
