Hawai’i a Golfers Paradise

December 27, 2013 By Linda Leave a Comment

Hawai’i offers something for everyone, and for the avid golfer the Islands of Hawai’i offer limitless opportunities to play some of the most beautiful courses in the world. No wonder Hawaii attracts golfers from around the world with breathtaking scenery of vivid green against ancient lava flows, the brilliant blue of the Pacific Ocean ,upcountry settings where the hole drops hundreds of feet below the tee-box into the valley below. Is it on your bucket list to play as many of Golf Digest “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses” ? If so you are in luck one can be found on the island of Kaua’i at the Prince Course.

With more than 70 amazing golf courses to choose from, there is a perfect course for you, I dare say there are probably more courses than you have time to play but this will give you a glimpse into some of your choices by island.

Lana’i– although small in size when compared to some of the other Hawaiian Islands, the island of Lana’i offers two amazing golf courses  upcountry The Experience at Koele  and The Challenge at Manele— in addition to amazing golf holes set along the cliffs the course also contains archaeological sites that should not be disturbed but at the the beauty of the course.

Kaua’i -being the oldest of the Hawai’i Islandsoffers some of the most beautiful scenery in all of Hawai’i as a backdrop to many of the golf holes found on the island. By far the premier courses on Kaua’i are located on the North Shore of Kauai Princeville Prince Golf  Course and Princeville Makai Course, 45 holes between the two locations.  Imagine driving your ball across a massive ravine with the ocean churning far below on the Ocean Nine’s famous Seventh Hole on the Makai Course.  If you are staying in the Poipu area then you find great golf there as well with the Puakea Golf Course, Kauai Lagoons Golf Club,Poipu Bay Golf Course In total Kauai offers nine courses many of which have hosted LPGA events as well as PGA of America’s Grand Slam of Golf.

O’ahu -home to over 40 golf courses (including military and private clubs) but for vistors to O’ahu have easy access to 29 nine of these courses. Including the first golf course ever built in Hawaii (in 1898) the semiprivate Moanalua Golf Club to courses that play host to the PGA. Ranging from independently owned and operated daily fee par three courses to some of the world’s most challenging hole designs. Top rated golf can be found at fine resorts in Ko Olina, North Shore  at Turtle Bay Resort , close by to Waikiki Coral Creek Golf Course, Pearl Country Club and Waikele Country Club.

Maui -known for its beauty and many say casual country club feel – the golf courses located on Maui do not disappoint. There are two distinct golfing destinations on Maui  West Maui where you will find 36 holes at both the Kaanapali Beach Resort and the Kapalua Resort  and then South Maui – home to Wailea (54 holes) and Makena (36 holes) – but there are also courses found in Wailuku and Pukalani as well.  Kaanapali  Kai Golf Course, by far the most famous or known by name The Plantation Course  in Kapalua, Wailea Emerald,Gold and Old Blue Courses  are found in Wailea.

Hawai’i Island (The Big Island) given the name of “Golf Capital of Hawaii” with such a wide variety of golf courses found on this island, opportunities to golf at any level abound on this island.A fine assortment of independent (non resort affiliated) daily fee courses, with lush green fairways that wind through ancient lava flows all set against the vivid blue of the ocean-truly unique to Hawaii Island. Sixteen publicly accessible golf courses are spread throughout Hawaii Island. For the serious golfer -world class golf can be found along the Kohala Coast resorts of Waikoloa, Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea – truly amazing courses.  Hualalai Golf Course at Historic Ka’upulehu – the original Nicklaus Course on the Big Island  at the Four Seasons Hualalai, Mauna Kea Golf Course at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Francis H. l’i Brown North and South Course at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows  and the Waikoloa Resort Courses.

Molokai even the laid back island of Molokai has  golf at the lovely Ironwood Hills Golf Course – a nine hole public course built in 1928 – no golf pros or clubhouse- no tee times needed – 3,088 yards of upcountryu pasture with splendid view.

Just remember that playing on the islands can be challenging- the winds can really mess you up,  putting on Bermuda for the first time can be a bit more difficult to read  but with so many great pros on hand to offer advise and lessons if needed enjoy your time playing golf in Hawaii.

Four of my favorite books on Hawai’i

Regardless of how many times I visit the Hawaiian islands I continue to learn more about the history of these beautiful islands. Part of of my love for the islands and curiosity  is fueled  by several books I have read over the years, especially those about the Royal Family, preservation of the islands,  local restaurants and […]
