Many receive a fresh orchid lei greeting upon arrival into Hawaii and do not realize that the lei play a part in so many aspects of Hawaii life and the lei day celebration is a day to showcase this. Flower leis are given to people for all sorts of occasions to say welcome, goodbye, for birthdays, weddings, graduations and more.  Many of the beautiful lei that will be on display will showcase the artistry of lei makers – and visitors  learn about the materials used and that htey have special spiritual and physical properties specially chosen for the giving of each lei. The type of flower used depends on the occasion, and different ones may be given to males and females, some popular flowers include orchids such as in the photo above, the maile vine, ilima, white ginger, tuberose, pikake and plumeria.
